Thousands Protest in Berlin Calling for Chancellor Merz to Resign
According to reports, police estimated the crowd at around 4,000 participants by midday, while organizers had expected up to 10,000. Authorities deployed roughly 700 officers to monitor the demonstration, which remained largely peaceful overall.
Many protesters carried German flags and held placards reading “Government resign,” “Merz must go,” and “Not my Chancellor,” while others accused the government of failing to address public concerns. Criticism was also directed at planned reforms and climate-related taxation policies.
The crowd also chanted “We are the people,” a slogan historically associated with pro-democracy movements but which in recent years has also been used by far-right populist groups.
The protest was organized by a group calling itself “Projekt M1llion,” which advocates for “direct democracy” and has promoted an 11-point agenda. The proposals include calls to halt migration, deport convicted offenders and undocumented migrants, stop ongoing healthcare reforms, and abolish the mandatory public broadcasting fee.
